As the Capital of Alberta, Edmonton has many attractions and interesting things to do. Edmonton is known for its natural scenery, food and history. Focusing on history, Edmonton is home to many museums like Canada’s largest living history museum, Fort Edmonton Park. The Park covers the region’s history from 1795 to 1929 through historical buildings, costumed historical interpreters and authentic artifacts. There are reproductions of streets through the years (chronologically 1885, 1905 & 1920) and topped off with a re-creation of a 1920’s midway. There is a steam train, streetcars, automobiles and horse-drawn vehicles in operation and utilized by the public around the park.
Its largest museum is the Royal Alberta Museum with over 10 million pieces of art that showcase the diverse aboriginal tribes’ practices and culture. The museum was renamed from the Provincial Museum of Alberta in 2005 after Queen Elizabeth II’s centennial visit. It moved from the original location in 2018 to a new building in downtown Edmonton at 103A Avenue and 97 Street.
The Telus World of Science is in the city’s northwest and has five permanent galleries, one temporary galley, IMAX theatre, planetarium, and observatory. It features many interactive exhibits like a giant piano that you play by walking over the keys. There are make-and-take workshops, a robotics lab that allows visitors to program pre-manufactured robots and has one of the only three 4K IMAX theatres in Canada.
These are just a few of many recreations that Edmonton has to offer. Whether you are a history buff, art aficionado or a sports fanatic Edmonton has something that will appeal to your liking.
